Vision and Mission:

Vision Statement. Creation of health equity and the elimination of health disparities for minority Ohioans.
Mission Statement: The Federation’s mission is to create a geographically and racially diverse coalition to address system change through civic engagement, policy and infrastructure development, and funding/resource development.

Our History

Founded in 2011, the Ohio Federation for Health Equity and Social Justice represents the culmination of efforts by a committed group of individuals passionate about addressing and bridging the significant gaps in health disparities. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, duly incorporated within the State of Ohio, our inception was fueled by a recognized need for an enhanced focus on health disparities, coupled with the vital importance of fostering community engagement and mobilization.
Throughout its development, it became increasingly evident that disparities in child welfare, juvenile justice, education, and economic security are intricately linked with health outcomes. This realization prompted an expansion of our mission to encompass a broader spectrum of social justice issues. Today, our organization prides itself on a strategic approach that not only focuses on health equity but also on creating systemic change across these interconnected sectors.
Our journey has been marked by numerous collaborations with individuals, local communities, and organizations at both the state and national levels. These partnerships are testament to our shared vision and dedication towards building a more equitable and just society for minority Ohioans and beyond.
At the Ohio Federation for Health Equity and Social Justice, we are propelled by a singular vision: the establishment of health equity and the eradication of health disparities among minority populations. Our mission, to form a diverse coalition aimed at initiating systemic change through civic engagement, policy development, infrastructure enhancement, and resource mobilization, guides our efforts each day.
We warmly invite individuals and organizations aligned with our vision to join us in this crucial endeavor. Together, we can forge a path toward a healthier, more equitable future for all.

Our Methodology

The Federation’s strength is in its ability to work across multiple sectors using unified approaches that encompass but not limited to: community mobilization and civic engagement, development and dissemination of position briefs that are policy and resource focused, capacity building, and development of infrastructure. The Federation holds the following guiding principles:
  • Health and Health Care Disparities Elimination. We are committed to the elimination of health and health care disparities for minority racial/ethnic minority communities, through the advancement of policy, community engagement, resource development, research, and programs that address socioeconomic determinants of health.
  • Capacity Building. We seek to build the capacity of state and local entities, and communities to raise awareness of and to achieve health equity and eliminate health disparities.
  • Community Empowerment. We are committed to engaging and empowering minority racial and ethnic communities and organizations in innovative ways to address minority health and health disparities issues.
  • Elimination of Disproportionality in Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice. We are committed to engaging and mobilizing communities to address the issue of over-representation of children of color in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.  We also seek to raise awareness in addressing  disparities in health outcomes for children in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems through the use of data and common sense policies.
